Feb. 3, 2007 - SHEFFIELD MILLS EAGLE WATCH WEEKEND II -- Temperature slightly above zero C. most of day, visibility very poor in mid-morning (foggy and snowing), later winds got strong and gusty, and blizzards developed twice in afternoon. On my way from Wolfville to Sheffield Mills, on the dykelands south of Port Williams, I confirmed the light-phase ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK seen there yesterday. And along Highway 358 at the Canard River was another ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, a DARK-PHASE individual. I didnšt get out to the eagle-feeding site at the north end of Middle Dyke Road until 10:45 a.m., and about 25 BALD EAGLES were sitting around together and not doing anything. Merritt Gibson said that many more eagles were present there and active at about 9:30 a.m. The crowds of eagle watchers were pretty slow and few today at the Community Hall. Richard Hennigar said they sold 300 + 300 breakfasts on the two days last weekend. Today Doug and Joanne Linzey saw 2 SHORT-EARED OWLS on a dyke near The Guzzle at northeast Grand Pre. We have a team assembled to attempt the 26th ANNUAL CYRIL K. COLDWELL EAGLES/RAPTORS COUNT OF EASTERN KINGšS COUNTY tomorrow, from 10 to 11 a.m. Wish us luck and good weather, and we will be reporting our results at the Sheffield Mills Community Hall. Last yearšs count yielded just short of 300 BALD EAGLES, a relatively low count for recent years (maximum 580, average about 400?).
