Thanks to three of you who replied. Sam has a friend in the Netherlands who has been using a freshly split coconut with the meat for years and apparently gets lots of birds coming to it. Thus my question was just about what is attracted to the coconut meat? Thanks for any further help, from Jim in Wolfville ---------- From: Lois Codling <loiscodling@hfx.eastlink.ca> Reply-To: naturens@chebucto.ns.ca Date: Wed, 31 Jan 2007 22:24:59 -0400 To: naturens@chebucto.ns.ca Subject: Re: [NatureNS] bird feeder made from coconut? Hi Jim, We have such a feeder, which when filled with black oil sunflower seeds attracts Chickadees, Purple Finch, Bluejays, Wh.-br. Nuthatches, even Goldfinch. Ours was made (not by us) out of a whole coconut with 3 large holes (2-3"diameter) cut out of the outer husk around the perimeter, meat removed, a carved wooden stick inserted in the top from the inside & hung from a hook. It has lasted a surprising number of years. We have hung it in a Dogwood bush quite low, and the birds love it. If you meant leaving the coconut meat inside, it would attract Chickadees, Nuthatches, perhaps Woodpeckers, depending on where it was hung. Lois Codling L.
