FYI---from DNR Nova Scotia and NFL DNR Dave ********************************************************************* Important. DO NOT TOUCH ANY FOUND DEAD BIRDS---report them to your local DNR office. Please note the attached about a disease outbreak among seagulls in Newfoundland. If there are any reports of similair occurences in Nova Scotia, collections should be made using the protocols circulated for West Nile Virus/Avian Influenza (by DNR staff). Barry Sabean Director of Wildlife Department of Natural Resources 136 Exhibition Street Kentville NS B4N 4E5 We are working with the Canadian Wildlife Services, the Atlantic Vet College and others in the investigation of a seagull die-off in our area. So far there have been birds picked up offshore (oil rigs) and in St. John's (Quidi Vidi Lake). Species effected so far appear to be great black backed gull, glaucous gull, and ivory gull though this is still early. I am advising you in case there are reported cases in your areas. The cause at this point appears to be avian cholera (Pasteurella multocida). As this can affect a large number of different bird species (waterfowl and scavengers) we should be on the lookout. A good review on avian cholera is available at http://www.nwhc.usgs.gov/publications/field_manual/chapter_7.pdf Thanks Dr. Hugh Whitney, (Provincial Veterinarian), Director, Animal Health Division, NL Dept. of Natural Resources P.
