Hi all,
I cannot refrain from sharing my brother's latest report of a
peacock sighting in a park (LeMoines Point) on the shore of windy Lake
Ontario near Kingston, Ont. He'd sighted the adult peacock in a pine
tree, while skiing at something like -15 C. Much colder with the wind
chill factored in.... Any reports of semi-tame peacocks in Nova Scotia?

Now about peacocks... the peacock is alive and well! I went skiing again today, then visited mom and dad on the way home. Of course, I went straight to where the peacock had been on Sunday. No sign of a peacock, but no sign of a frozen carcass either.

There is an entire grove of youngish pine trees there, so I got the idea to look around some more. It was windier, though warmer than on Sunday. I entered a sort of inner sanctum within the pines - and sure enough, I experienced my second January peacock sighting! There he was, in his blue glory and crown, turning his head to look me over.

This second sighting felt as improbable as the first. Things seemed to be going my way. I could hear a tractor on the farm and some voices, so I took off my skis, stepped over the fence, and walked over there.

"You're not missing a peacock, by any chance?" I asked the tractor operator. He was there to feed the livestock while the owners were away and explained that yes, there are peacocks on the farm, but that they are free to go where they please. They nest in the barn, have food available, but are not penned.

They fly where they want, and this peacock seems to like that grove of pine trees in the park itself. On Sunday he was soaking up the sun, today he moved in deeper where there was shelter from the wind. Totally appropriate behaviour. I assume he also made a trip home for a snack at some point. Apparently, a spell of cold weather doesn't bother a peacock all that much...

What a delightful experience!

Ivan.
