As usual, the main two weekends are the last weekend in January and the first weekend in February, namely Jan. 27-28 and Feb. 3-4. On both weekends there will be pancake and sausage breakfasts, served until early afternoon, coffee and juice and muffins etc., maps of local area showing eagle hot-spots, displays of mounted birds of prey from Acadia University Biology, videos to view about the bald eagles of N.S. in winter vs. summer, photos from the annual photo contest, various crafts and photos etc. for sale, etc., all at the Sheffield Mills Community Centre, which is west from Canning or north and east from Middle Dyke Road (north from Exit 12? off Highway 101 at New Minas/Kentville -- follow the eagle-head blue signs. The third weekend, Feb. 10-11, will be more subdued, with no breakfast served but coffee and muffins available, maps, birds of prey displays, videos to view, at the hall. The weather lately has been GREAT for the purpose of the Eagle Watch, i.e., very cold with a bit of snow on the ground (more would be even better) -- this kind of weather will concentrate the eagles in mornings at the feeding sites, where poultry farmers put out chicken carcasses. BE SURE TO GET TO THE AREA BETWEEN NINE AND TEN IN THE MORNING. If you know the sites, do some viewing first and then come to the hall to warm up and tell us about the eagles. If you are unfamiliar with the area, get to the hall quickly, pick up a map of eagle spots to check out, then do that, then come back to the hall. Eagle activity is much reduced in the afternoon, whether they are sitting around in trees or soaring up high in the sky. In late afternoon the eagles go off to communal roosting sites in dense woods -- the best known of these sites is upstream (west) from White Rock in the Gaspereau River Valley. The eagles will likely stay around for the winter if they are pleased at the turn-out. Surprisingly, I have seen nothing on this event on the NatureNS list yet. Perhaps someone else could post the details, with a copy to NATURENB. Note that postings to NATURENB have to be in plain text.
