===================================================== --Apple-Mail-67-660666657 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; delsp=yes; format=flowed Hi all, Several points: 1) Sporadic slowdowns: In terms of slowdowns in processing email, few outfits would be able to cope with a sudden 150-fold increase in spam (as the CCN has experienced) and not exhibit some slowdowns. I've noticed slowdowns in the processing of email through other ISPs that I deal with and as Peter Stow points out even AOL has been experiencing slowdowns. Not all ISPs are as candid about this as the CCN is 2) Archived lists: as I've repeatedly pointed out, at least in the past an archived lists was there for the asking at the CCN. Do people want it? If so, let's ask. 3) For-profit services inject advertising into the posts distributed on a list. For some people increasing their exposure to more advertising may not be consequential. For my part I prefer the email arriving in my inbox not to be flogging various products or services. Indeed, call me sentimental, but I do have a preference for a non- profit, community-based service run in Nova Scotia almost entirely by volunteers in preference to a for-profit multi-national service. The Chebucto Community Net was founded on the principal that there is something healthy and productive in people and organizations working together in their local communities for mutual good. The CCN has hosted Naturens, gratis, for what, a decade. On balance the CCN has provided a remarkable good, consistent, and reliable service - usually quick to respond to concerns, and community based. I, for one, am not interested in jumping ship just because we experience a sporadic slowdown. N.B. One terminological point: There are a variety of software packages that run listservers. The two of the most popular and versatile are Majordomo and Listserv (not the absence of the "e" at the end of the word). I'm not sure what Yahoo runs, perhaps a proprietary software package of their own. Thus, NatureNS is already a listserver list. All the best!
