But, by increasing the turbulence of the water in the pond, the fountain may reduce the amount of ice on the pond in the winter. This would probably increase its attractiveness to the birds. The pond freezes and thaws many times each winter, depending on the air temparature and on the amount of water flowing in via the "Sawmill River." People keep feeding waterfowl in and around the pond, despite admonitions from HRM staff. I wonder whether the birds were poisoned, inadvertently or on purpose...
