Hello Bernard - and others who answered my question -
          After a thorough search of my books I have concluded that the =
bird was indeed an immature grackle.  I found one in Sibley's - the only =
bird in the book that resembled the one in my yard. Actually, I should =
have guessed already because I had a bird like it  in the fall a year or =
two ago.  This one had iridescence on the head and on the wings but the =
back was a dull black. I assume this means the bird was in the process =
of moulting and changing from adolesence to maturity. As I remember the =
one of a couple of years ago the eyes were beginning to change as well, =
about half way between black and yellow. This one has pure black eyes.
           I filled all my feeders late yesterday - this morning  when I =
got up every seed was gone. I think I must have had a large flock of =
grackles visiting me early this morning.
