For some reason, this message posted last evening still has not appeared on NatureNS. So am re-sending and hope that it appears only once.

Cheers,

Bob

Subject: Windsor and Valley Ponds

Hello All,

Wendy and I travelled to the Wolfville area today on the pretense of buying some fresh fruits and veggies. We stopped at several locations to do some birding and here are some of the birds we saw:

Shell Environmental Park:
 - G. Yellowlegs (1)
 - RN Pheasant (2)
 - Chipping Sparrow (1)
 - A. Robin (~150-200) - seemed to be all "Brown-backed"
 - BC Chickadee (6)
 - RT Hawk (2)
 - D. Woodpecker (1)
 - H. Lark (~10)
 - GW Teal (~10)

Windsor sewage ponds
 - GB Heron (1)
 - C. Goose (~55)
 - BB Plover (65-70) - roosting on the bank between the 2 ponds
 - Sandpiper sp (20-25) - slept through our whole visit
 - A. Wigeon (4)

Port Williams sewage ponds
 - Barrow's Goldeneye (1)!!
 - Mallard (12)

van Nostrands/DU ponds (where we met Neil van Nostrand)
 - A. Coot (2)
 - H. Merganser (pair)
 - RN Duck (3)

Harris' pond
 - C. Goose (~60)
 - H. Merganser (~10 - all female)
 - W. Snipe (1)
 - RN Pheasant (1)
 - RN Duck (3)

Saxon St ponds
 - a few Mallards, otherwise nothing!!

Canard pond
 - GW Teal (~150)
 - Mallard (~60)
 - N Pintail (8-10)
 - A Wigeon (4)

Along Saxon St. we picked up 2 of the LBB Gulls which Richard Stern mentioned in a previous message. There must be over 1000 gulls in this area!! We also saw a total of perhaps 8 Bald Eagles during our travels; all were immatures!! Only 3 Rt Hawks were observed, and we noted no other raptors.

Thanks to Jim W for his directions which got us to the ponds and kept us from getting lost, and to Jim, Judy and Richard for their posts on the pond life.

Cheers,

Bob McDonald,
Halifax
