This morning there was a very tame 1st-cycle Mew Gull among the Ring-billed Gulls at Sullivan's Pond in Dartmouth, making comparison with similarly-aged Ring-bills very easy. It walked around at my feet for several minutes. Richard Stern today (and I previously) have pointed out that Lesser Black-backed Gulls are not really rare any more. Nonetheless, it's worth noting that there were two 1st- cycle birds among the other large gulls at MacCormack's Beach this morning, distinguishable by their very dark greater coverts, evenly-marked, unbarred tertials, and very dark wing pattern in flight.
