It really is amazing the amount of time, effort and money which the CFIA has put into controlling/eradicating the BSLB. Even more amazing and very sad is the number of live, healthy trees which have been cut down and burned to the same end. Several years ago, I met and challenged a group of workers busily cutting trees on the campus of Mount Saint Vincent University. As evidence for the presence of the beetles, the supervisor pointed to a tiny bored hole in a tree trunk!! "There's one in there", he stated emphatically. When I mentioned that there were native wood-boring beetles, he simply turned around and walked away. Hopeless! When I found out soon thereafter, how many (or how few) actual BSL beetles had been actually found, I became convinced that Chris is right and CFIA is wrong! I understand the practice of tree cutting continues even now in one of our Regional Parks, namely Hemlock Ravine. As if that park had not suffered enough from Juan! Also, Chris, thanks for clarifying the status of the newly-discovered brush-finch. It was interesting to read the discussion regarding possible species status for this bird. Good thing that these guys are not in the same room - you can almost see the sparks fly on occasion....
