and abbreviated to Hants, the County was established out of part of =20
what had been Kings County. The words of the minutes of the Council of =20=

Nova Scotia for June 17, 1781 make it clear that the distance from =20
Horton (the County town of Kings County) and the inconvenience of =20
crossing the Avon River to transact county business were factors which =20=

led to a separate county being formed.
Four and a half years later its boundaries were more precisely defined =20=

and set forth by the Governor and Council in 1785. The boundary lines =20=

of Hants were duly surveyed and confirmed by the Lieutenant Governor =20
1828.
Subsequently in 1861, Hants County was divided into two Districts =20
called East Hants and West Hants.

The issue of apostrophes is an interesting one. I thought that the main =20=

reason they were dropped was because where we have so much coastline, =20=

it was to avoid the potential on nautical charts for an apostrophe to =20=

be mistake for a rock, or more importantly, a rock from being mistaken =20=

for an apostrophe.

I don't know if Kings County was ever spelled with an apostrophe. This =20=

is consistent with a late-1800s map of the area around Galway that I =20
saw while in Ireland over the summer. In Ireland everything is =20
described with respect to the county, something you rarely see here. =20
Any way, the map showed County Kings to the east of County Galway. =20
Having spent lot of time preparing for the trip, I knew that modern =20
Ireland has no Co. Kings; it is now called Co. Westmeath, and I expect =20=

it was renamed after the formation of the republic.... and since it is =20=

west of Co. Meath=85

Last year I purchased the reprint of the Historical Atlas of the =20
Maritime Provinces 1878, (Nimbus Publishing). It has Kings and Queens =20=

for the counties in N.S. N.B., and P.E.I. and Hants, also without an =20
apostrophe. (One oddity about the map that I have found is that there =20=

are communities of Rawdon, Sth. Rawdon, and Upr. Rawdon, yet the =20
district around them is called Randon. I am guessing it is a typo=85 It =20=

is also interesting that Kings County only had three districts =20
(Aylesford, Cornwallis, and Horton) while Hants County has ten =20
(Douglas, Falmouth, Kempt, Maitland, Newport, Rawdon, Shubenacadie, =20
Uniacke, Walton, and Windsor).

Jon's right, of course, but there is an issue here that needs a
