Hi Jeannie,

The one on the left is definitely a European Garden Spider, Araneus  
diadematus. The one on the right could be as well: I don't know how  
variable individuals can be (my knowldge of spiders is very limited).  
Since there are 17 species of Araneus in Canada it would be worth  
investigating other possibilities before coming to a definite  
conclusion.
