Oct. 6, 2006 - WINDSOR SEWAGE PONDS in early afternoon, one hour after high
tide:

250 CANADA GEESE (no other geese -- I thought for a moment I saw a sleeping
goose with a white neck-band, but I must have been mistaken); about 50
RING-BILLED GULLS; 1 male AM. WIGEON; 15+ GREEN-WINGED TEAL; lots of BLACK
DUCKS; 1 male BLACK-MALLARD ³HYBRID²; 5 ROCK PIGEONS;

SHOREBIRDS (very few in total) included 8-10 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, 3
YELLOWLEGS (both species present); about 15 ³PEEPS² (small sandpipers).

The sewage ponds gate was open, so I drove in. While scoping from the paved
road inside the fence, a water works employee pulled up in his truck and
told me to get out, that I was unwelcome. Thus perhaps birders should be
careful in the future to speak to someone first before trespassing.

The pond away from the public road held very little, about 25 Can. geese, 3
black-bellied plovers, and a couple of dozen mixed black ducks and teal and
the wigeon.
----------------
In Wolfville, at the top of Grandview Drive, Ruth Scottıs pond held about 50
MALLARDS (mostly paired up already) and at least 3 pairs of BLACK DUCKS.
Ruth has most of them fairly tame, since they are used to her presence and
getting occasional treats plus the peace and safety of her pond, which is
along hwy. 101 and therefore very noisy. It's interesting that mallards and
black ducks pair up so early in the Autumn, whereas many or most of the
other ducks wait until at least Winter or into Spring.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville, 542-9204
