Index of Subjects --Apple-Mail-23-677336222 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; delsp=yes; format=flowed Hi Jeannie, This is a specimen of Polistes fuscatus, in the Vespidae. "Yellow- jacket" is typically applied to wasps of the genus Vespula (of which there are quite a number) except for Vespula maculata, which is commonly called the "Baldfaced Hornet." I'm not certain that the term "paper wasp" can be used with any real specificity. Paper wasps are those in the family Vespidae, in the strict sense those belonging to the subfamily Polistinae, but the term is also used colloquially to include some members of the subfamilies Vespinae and Stenogastrinae which also make nests out of paper. In the case of most insects, Latin names are really indispensable since English names are frequently lacking or are unclear. Cheers, Chris On 27-Sep-06, at 12:51 PM, Jeannie wrote: > Could someone tell me if a yellow jacket and a paper wasp are one- > in-the-same?
