Hey folks! Here’s something you can do to help nature, from the comfort of your own computer, in 5 minutes or less. An interim report on a provincial heritage strategy for Nova Scotia has been released by Voluntary Planning’s latest task force. In it there are a number of very good recommendations to protect our natural heritage, including expanding Nova Scotia’s system of protected areas, removing barriers to private land conservation, developing a coastal management plan, and encouraging green certification of forestry companies through the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). The full document can be viewed online at http://www.gov.ns.ca/vp/ Task_Force/Task_Force_Reports/Heritage_Interim_En.pdf The Natural Heritage section is on pages 29-31. The key recommendations on Natural Heritage are as follows: *************** 31. Work diligently and with a sense of urgency to complete the provincial protected areas network. 32. Support private land conservation through direct investment and incentives, and by working to eliminate barriers faced by private landowners who want to leave a legacy to their community. 33. Develop a coastal management plan to protect Nova Scotia’s coastline and ensure that public access is not lost to private land ownership or development. 34. Review industrial forestry practices in Nova Scotia. Adopt measures and standards, such as Forest Stewardship Council certification, to ensure the sustainability of healthy forests and the sustainability of the wildlife dependent on these forests. *************** Voluntary Planning is asking for feedback from the public on this interim report until this Friday, September 30, and it’s important that they hear from as many folks as possible. We know that forces opposed to conservation in Nova Scotia are submitting their views. If the taskforce doesn’t receive enough positive comments about their interim recommendations they may be watered down or dropped altogether. And in the end, the final report will be the only one given to government to act upon. So please, take a few minutes right now to respond to the call for comments and support these important policy recommendations before it’s too late to do so. It’s easy to do. Just send them an e-mail saying you support recommendations #31 through #34 --and anything else you’d like to add. The e-mail address is: volplan@gov.ns.ca. There’s only 3 days left so please do it now … for the love of nature.
