Dear All, Sept 23, 2006 Further to a previous post-- |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| Hi Brian, Richard & All, Sept 19, 2004 This is probably unrelated, apart from involvement of the same tree species, but numerous White Birch in the Kentville area are now affected by a dieback that starts in the tops/branch ends and works downward/inward over several years. From the progression of symptoms I suspect it is caused by xylem blockage by fungi or bacteria that gained a toe-hold by invading roots killed by water stress in a series of dry summers. |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| --and following two summers of adequate or ample rainfall (2005 & 2006), many of the Birch trees that were in serious decline by 2004 are in recovery mode. This is consistent with dry summers being a major cause of the previous decline. Yours truly, Dave Webster, Kentville
