Sept. 17, 2006

I saw a Monarch in our yard in White's Lake today, only the second
time I've recorded this species locally. The sighting reminded me
that I neglected to report on the various odes I found at the small
barachois pond at Wagner's beach this past Thursday. Wagner's Beach
is near Prospect, with the following map showing the location:

I went to the beach to pick the last of the season's blackberries,
but also took along my net and field guide. There mating meadowhawks
and spreadwings which I left alone, but I caught a male Black-tipped
Darner, a Common Green Darner, and a male Familiar Bluet. The Darner
and the Bluet were both lifers for me. There had earlier been some
Twelve-spotted Skimmers, but there was no sign of them on Thursday.

Birds, however, were scarce -- the winds were from the wrong quarter.

Cheers,
