this is interesting -- in the Globe and Mail today.

Marathon efforts

A bird that weighs less than a bag of sugar has completed the longest migration on record, reports The Times of London. The sooty shearwater travels the Pacific Ocean in a figure-eight pattern each year, flying up to 74,000 km. The birds can cover up to 1,094 km. a day, according to scientists. Tracking data also show the birds dive to a depth of 14 metres, on average, to catch fish, squid and krill and can dive as deep as 68.5 metres. The arctic tern, no slouch at migrating, covers 35,400 km. annually between the polar icecaps.
