The so-called "green June Beetle" is Cotinus nitida (Linnaeus). If it really was this, then it would have been exceedingly interesting to have had the specimen to check the identification since Cotinus nitida does not occur in North America north of southern New York state and Connecticut. It's never been recorded anywhere in Canada. If it was a stray (or possibly a released specimen; Cotinus beetles are commonly bought and traded by enthusiasts) its also good to check since there are four species in this genus that are found in the United States (four other species are found in bordering areas of northern Mexico): Cotinis boylei Goodrich Cotinis impius Fall Cotinis mutabilis Gory and Percheron http://www.flower-beetles.com/foto/cotinis2.jpg Cotinis nitidus Linnaeus http://bugguide.net/node/view/6684/bgpage These are very similar to one another and some species can only be reliably determined on close examination. There are, in fact, 22 species in the genus, the other 18 species being found in Mexico, and Central and South America. If you should see the beetle around again, by all means hold on to it! ;-> Cheers, Chris _._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._. _.
