[**Note: this is an action item -- see last two paragraphs.]

The model forest program funded by the Canadian Forest Service (CFS)
expires in early 2007. Something called the Forest Communities Program
(funded at a somewhat lower level) will begin in April. CFS is currently
entertaining "expressions of interest" from groups such as the Nova
Forest Alliance (NFA) for funding to continue the sort of research and
education activities NFA has been undertaking.

In August, the management committee approved a new direction -- a work
plan that will include three focus areas in Nova Scotia, with a possible
fourth in PEI:
1. Southwest Nova Biosphere Reserve (protected areas and working landscapes)
2. St. Mary's River Watershed (agriculture, forest practices, and
recovery of waterways)
3. Bras d'Or Lakes and Cape Breton Highlands (forest, water, and
wildlife management)

Here's what the management committee has to say about these "community
models":
"Each site holds unique opportunities for community, research, and
management engagement regarding critical forest, resource, and
environmental issues. Each already has a base, with dedicated
organizations, academic support, government involvement, and the resolve
to advance the many facets of stewardship. These local organizations
have agreed to work together with NFA to advance our collective aims.
The NFA focus will not be limited solely to these study areas. We will
continue to influence positive change by working with woodland owners
everywhere, hosting the Colin Stewart Forest Forum process, and by
achieving on-the-ground demonstrations throughout Nova Scotia."

The NFA office would like letters of support from members to accompany
its "expression of interest" to CFS.

I think this plan fits more than ever our own (NNS) objectives and that
we should support it wholeheartedly. As NNS rep to NFA, I propose to
write a brief supporting letter to Bob Bancroft. Time, unfortunately, is
very short (my fault for taking summer too seriously -- it *is* a time
to do other things, isn't it?) -- I have to get this in by Monday noon.
But I would appreciate a straw poll from board members, especially if
anyone has any objection.

Thanks,
Doug Linzey
