Hi All Today we visited a white fish lake. The researcher writing notes and me paddling! The lake is interesting - a low dam at one end created a new shoreline from 0 m to 100 m from the original. The original is steep into deep water, really regular - looks like it was man made. The original shoreline was big broken rocks with sharp edges. Would do great work on a boat bottom - or any other bottom for that matter. The rocks are piled up along the edge to form a barrier and then they dip down with the result there is a lagoon of shallow water between the outer barrier and the inner shore. Must have been some forces there once upon a time. The dam having been there a long time has cleared away the vegetation to make the geology visible. Birds we saw were two broods of ringnecks ( 5 and 6 chicks ) about 2 weeks old. They can dive very well at that age and travel a long piece under water. Also a brood ( 4 or 5 ) common mergs with their mother. They didn't dive but flapped away over the water. Also 2 GW teal - they had a different method of exiting the area - they flew. We also saw a pair of loons with a half growed chick. Only the second loon chick that I saw this year. Also a few GB herons, a Horned Owl, an osprey and many warblers in the bushes along the lake. It being a warm day, we also saw some things thats I cann't mention in polite company. Enjoy the summer - paddle a lake - see some unmentionables!
