Hi there, Jean Hartley was in Point Pleasant Park in Halifax on Friday afternoon, and saw a variety of shorebirds in the peaty wooded swamp on Birch Road, between the bridle path and Maple Walk. Since Hurricane Juan blew down so many trees in this swamp a few years ago, it gets much more sunshine. The water levels have dropped and a large area of drying peaty muck is exposed. (I don't think this body of water has a name; it's east of and downhill from Quarry Pond.) Jean reported Willets, Yellowlegs, and several smaller shorebirds. I visited the Park on Monday late in the afternoon, under very grey skies. At the swamp I found one (Greater?) Yellowlegs, and one Solitary Sandpiper. Elsewhere in the park I ran into several mixed flocks of small birds, including large numbers of Juncos with many young, Black-capped Chickadees, Red-eyed Vireos, and some warblers. Yellow-rumpeds were the most abundant, but I also saw Magnolias, an American Redstart, a Common Yellowthroat, and a male Wilson's Warbler. Cheers, Patricia L. Chalmers Halifax
