Others may know more about this than I, however, there are eight
subspecies of the Barn Swallow (Hirundo rustica):

1) The nominate Hirundo rustica rustica which is the common European
one;
2) Hirundo rustica savignii which is found in Egypt;
3) Hirundo rustica transitiva which is found in the eastern
Mediterranean and middle east;
4) Hirundo rustica erythrogaster which is the North American subspecies;
5) Hirundo rustica gutturalis which is an Asian subspecies (southern
China);
6) Hirundo rustica mandschurica is found in Manchuria and NE China;
7) Hirundo rustica saturata also an Asian subspecies found in eastern
Siberia;
8) Hirundo rustica tytleri also an Asian subspecies (India).

There is a good article in the Wikipedia on the subspecies of Barn
Swallows:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barn_Swallow

An interesting aside is that the Barn Swallow is the national bird of
Estonia for whom it represents free blue sky and eternal happiness.
According to Estonian legend, anyone who kills a Barn Swallow will
become blind.

Cheers!

Chris
