It's a strange place to find a productive pond (i.e. a gravel pit) but this
one has yielded interesting sightings for me since I discovered it this
summer. Yesterday there were:
- 1 Solitary Sandpiper (which allowed a close approach for good pics)
- many meadowhawks including Band-winged.
- several Sprites/forktails (also dragonflies) which I photographed but
have yet to analyze.
- a few Spreadwings
- many Common Whitetails (mostly males but I saw two females). These
Whitetails have an amazing long flight period. They start in early June!
Next to meadowhawks (which involve 3-4 species) they are the most common
dragonfly in Kings County.
- also lots of interesting bugs!
Angus
