Thatch Roof

This is a close-up view of the thatch roof created by Jeff Achenbach. The thatch is made from the reeds of Phragmites communis, the so-called 'Common Reed', a member of the Fecue Tribe of Grasses. It is a plant which is found around the world on all continents.

Properly constructed a thatch roof will last sixty or seventy years with little maintenance. On the roof you can see some of the wooden poles which are used to anchor and stabalize the thatch as well as some of the rafters on the interior of the cob cottage. You can also see some of the racemes (the flowering heads) of the Phragmites which have not been trimmed off.

Plunge through the roff to get inside the cottage (only don't let the security guard see you doing it!) or else click on the right side to see the open right side of the cob cottage.
